Lake superior, your beautiful!
Hey y'all, Im back a little bit sooner this time. What a surprise ha ha. Friday, was a good day at work. You know how I told you about the homeless guy that I helped? Well I got to have the chance to sit down and have coffee with him, it was nice. And Im happy to hear he is doing okay now. In the afternoon I made homeade perogies!! It's funny that Im Ukrainian and I have never made homeade ones before. And the person who taught me wasn't Ukrainian, so thats kind of funny. So hopefully my Katima Group likes them, since I will serve them this week, Im excited and proud of them ha ha!
Friday night, the other daughter in my billet family came for a visit, since she lives with her mom. The family doesn't see her very often, so it was nice they could all visit. All the kids were so happy together, laughing away. Reminded me of being home when everyone is home for supper. And how much I laugh with my family. However, It was nice hanging out with them!
Saturday, was a very eventful day. My billet family took me to the healing centre, where people come for ceremonies and rituals. It was very interesting. There were 13 pillars in the building representing the 13 moons. The aboriginal culture is so amazing, they are so in tune with nature and this world. Something most of the world has lost touch with. It really inspires me; Also there was sweat lodges there too, people go in these for different reasons. Isaiah the 18 year old in my billet family, did a fast. Which meant going out in the bush for four days, alone. Where he couldn't eat or drink. The purpose of this is to see a vision. After his fast, he then went in the sweat lodge. After that we went to see a small community called Echo Bay. It was cool, because the artist who designed the loonie was from that town. So they have a huge loonie plaque, I got a picture! After that adventure, we went out to see lake superior. It was about an hour away. Along the way I got to see solar farms, with all the solar pannels. It was incredible, there were so may of them for as far as you could see. I also saw Windmills. They were huge, and there were so many of them! It wasn't anything that I had expected. It's cool that this town relays on some energy, that is conserved in such a natural way!
I was so excited to finally see Lake Superior. It has been my goal to see it since I have been here! It was incredible. Its the largest fresh water lake in the world! I am very happy that I got to see it, and touch the water. We had pizza for supper, it was yummy. I don't get to eat out very often being here, so I enjoyed that. I got to see Sam again last night, so that was nice. He came back this way, and it worked out. Then it was difficult saying goodbye all over again. However there won't be a next time, so Safe Journeys Sam!
Today was my last day at my billets. It was so sad leaving, I really enjoyed my family. I felt very comfortable, and it was perfect. They taught me a lot about their culture, and I have gained new respect for Aboriginals. I believe they are beautiful people. Natalie, made a lovely supper. So good, I will definitely miss the cooking there! I will also miss the comfy bed ha ha. They gave me a dream catcher, a sweet grass pin, and braided sweet grass, and information on other cultural things. And the card was so nice, it made me cry. I hope to visit again one day! It was an unforgettable experience for sure.
Well Im house manager this week, and so much is going on! Tomorrow night we have Yoga, and we have our KCC meeting. Im filling in for Chelsea as Secretary so thats another added responsibility. This weekend is the Soup Kitchen Sleep In a Box Fundraiser. And yes the weather says it will be raining, however the Sault Ste. Marie group will be braving it out, as well as our Katima Cousins Elliot Lake as we sleep in a box! They are spending the weekend with us, it will be a grand time. And it will be a chance for us to learn about their community, and experiences so far:) Katie and I plan to have a theme night this week, so it will be a very fun filled week, as well as busy.
As of now I have been away for nine weeks already on Wednesday. Time has been running past me, but at a good rate. My group leaves in three weeks for New Brunswick. Things will be changing soon enough. I will enjoy my last weeks here. I will miss the community, and soup kitchen a lot! And of course I am always missing everyone back at home!
Lots of Love,
Amy (:
