This is not Goodbye, instead "See you later"
Hello everyone! Things have been super crazy on my end wrapping things up for this rotation. I left you off from Monday. Tuesday we had our last french lesson- We got to play with Lego, in a french activity of course it was fun. Our french teacher brought us muffins, and presents it was so cute! I will miss her. How could I forget! Tuesday was also my last day with Susan, the funny one who comes in on Tuesdays! She was so funny, she definitely managed to get in to the bathroom and use all the paper towel. Wednesday we went to yoga again, I swear it got more difficult from the last time I was there. However, it felt so nice after and I enjoy meditation so it was good for me. I hope to continue going when we get to Moncton!
Thursday was our wonderful farewell potluck supper with our work partners, billet families, and the community. It was so special to have everyone come to our house, and actually have a good turnout this time. We did our presentation I mentioned before, our "Katima Casserole". We were all chefs and added in our story from our experiences here. Ill type out mine so you can all read what I said!
"Hello Im chef Amy! Im going to add to the mix with my job at the soup kitchen. To start off I myst put in some positivity for all the happiness and smiles I saw everyday. The one ingredient I can't forget is Love- As this is what keeps the Soup Kitchen going. All the volunteers warm my heart everyday, and I need to add tons and even more "laughter". Since all the staff laughed and jokes all day with me. I won't forget runs with Ed- Listening to his favorite Justin Bieber, The busy kitchen while preparing meals. I'll put in some Joy for when people received a hot meal everyday, Also the good food boxes busyness once a month, and all the people I crossed paths with. They all hold a special place in my heart. I learned that poverty is a huge problem, and I will add in some awareness in for this cause. To make this experience perfect, Ill sprinkle some inspiration in for what it gave back to me. And I won't forget what life direction I got received from this place. This recipe takes a turn when I add in my billeting experience. To start off I must add the welcomeness my family opened up to me. And ill add laughs since we were usually laughing. I was fortunate to be on the reserve, and for my family to share their culture with me even it it means taking innocent me in the bush to hunt. I thank you for that. Here is some knowledge for what I learned. I loved all the delicious food, and I appreciated my billet family pretty much going vegetarian during my stay. You are all so special to me, and I know you will be a family on my list to write to. To make it perfect- a dash of awesome for it was more than I expected. To complete my touch to our katima casserole I must tell you all here at the katima house we do more than what you think! Lets stir up some "Awareness" for when we slept in a box for the soup kitchen sleepover! And fun too because it was such an experience to be part of an amazing fundraiser."
And there it is my recipe put in to the katima casserole, everyone added in their experiences. And all our guests really enjoyed our presentation. We also had a slideshow going during the night. The next day which was Friday, was our last day at our jobs. Mine was okay, it was really difficult and I cried. In the afternoon I did the play again one final time with the soup kitchen cast. And then we started our debriefing Friday evening. We played a fun game called "Screaming Viking" and did "The gift that keeps on giving" with the present from our PL. He got us a journal he wants us all to write in during the program, and continue to mail it to each other after to put our thoughts in it, and keep in contact. He also gave us one of those glass containers which was a snowman and it contained ginger bread cookie dry ingredient mix. It is so cute, so we will make the cookies in Moncton, to think of Ben! We were also asked to take down the following statments, "One thing I appreciate about you" "What I have learned from you" And one thing I wish for you in the future. And we had to come up with these things for everyone in the group, to say. We also had to make a timeline of our time in this rotation, it could be about the community events we have done, and also personal things we went through during this rotation. Mine was a mixture of both. Saturday, we continued debriefing, starting will presenting our timelines, it was so interesting to see everyones perspectives on their time here. In the afternoon we went to take a group picture with Santa Claus it was so cute, and fun!! It's funny our PL put that in to our schedule of something we MUST do. Saturday night, our last night with our PL:( we were told to meet in the backyard where he had a fire going. I missed that smell. When everyone was there, we were sent on a "Solo" which is like independent and quite thinking for yourself to reflect. We had to return back with something "Solid, which would represent something solid we bring to the group, something that is growing, which would represent a quality or something we hope that will continue to grow from a personal perspective, and lastly something that we can burn which would be a habit or something we want to burn." I went and found my objects, then I sat in a tree in a middle of a snow covered park. It was refreshing, and so nice to just think and reflect on my time here.
I returned, with a piece of ice to represent me being a leader, and my ability to show initiative to organize activities. And I can also be strong for the group, when they need strength. I brought grass which would have grown in the spring, and it represents my french learning, and not using as much English. So I will continue to improve and learn french during the next rotation. My third item to burn was, not being so alone, and always thinking of whats going on at home. It's time for me to get to know the group more, and focus on the program. This might mean putting my computer away for a week at a time, I just think my priorities have been placed wrong lately. So that will be my big change. After this, we were all so cold and the fire wasn't keep us as warm anymore. SO we went in and Ben had his last game of scrabble with Kyle and Mitch. Thats our PL's favorite thing. As a group we gave him a scrabble board we made, well Katie made it. And on it was all the words that reminded us of him. He also has been learning sign language. SO we all said "We will miss you" In sign language. It was so fun! He really loved it.
This morning, we woke up at like 7 to say bye to him, as he is moving to work as a PL in Rockland, which is a suburb of Ottawa. It is a French placement, and they needed a bilingual Project leader. So it was difficult saying goodbye to him, however we will be moving on ourselves as well. All day we have cleaned a ton, I spent like 2 hours in the bathroom cleaning, So I am pretty exhausted. I am just about to head up to my room to begin packing. I have definitely put it off lately, I just have SO much stuff.
Thats my life up to now, Elliot Lake Group comes tomorrow as well as our project coordinator to begin mass debriefing. And then we leave early wednesday morning at like 4AM. Crazy, everything is happening so fast. I hope everyone is doing well back at home, Miss you all!
Lots of Love- Amy(:
