Christmas Trees can be paper, who needs a real tree?
Finally looking like christmas here. We aren't aloud to have a christmas tree since it is a fire hazard apparently. Anyway we made due. We cut a christmas tree out of wrapping paper, and taped it to the wall. I made little decorations out of construction paper to be the bulbs of lights, with glitter. Everyone will have one to write a nice katima memory on and we can tape them to the tree as well. We also put decorations around the house finally, and put christmas lights up which we aren't supposed to have either. Lets see what happens when our project coordinator comes for a visit. I think its funny we have such tacky decorations, and our light aren't in perfect line. It resembles our diverse group, and unique christmas away from home. We got to make the most out of it!
I left you off on Thursday, and I mentioned how our collective project is the YMCA youth night. We did go to it, and I really enjoyed myself. There was a lot of kids, and they really needed our help. The kids were not too open to us at first, and we just need to remember to keep an open mind. The ages is 12-17 so thats why their attitude is a little weird. They rather chill, and talk. However, they warmed up a little as the night went on. I played cards with a couple girls, and I must say I am getting way better at crazy eights now! It was also cool, that a couple girls had already opened up to me, and I could be there to offer advice. These kids really look up to everyone as role models, so I believe we can make a big difference going in every week, and planning activities.
Saturday morning we went to the mall and participated in a really cool event. The mob freeze event. These are put on by anyone who wants to organize it in their local mall. There are groups on facebook, and you just start one if you want to do one. Anyway, a group of people in this area set it up. And how it works is those who know about it all meet in a certain area, and it was in the food court, and surrounding area. And the organizer sets off a red balloon, and as soon as you see it you freeze. People who are shopping and such, get so confused. There were 150 people who froze. It lasts three minutes, and as soon as the person says oh my god my balloon! You stop. There was lots of video cameras! We also got publicity, Claude in our group got interviewed by a french journalist. That was great because that counted as one of our communication projects, we need to do three events which recruit people, and make the community aware of what we do in their community. Check all this jazz out, it shows people freezing and you can see me and chelsea in the background at one point, and it has Claude's interview as well - http://www.capacadie.com/videos/160812
After a few people did shopping, and we got Ben our old PL a Nerf gun, he always talked about having nerf battles and such. So thats his christmas present and we shall send it his way. We are also sending the picture of us with Santa! It was nice to have a lot of free time on Saturday. After supper we did more brainstorming for the YMCA, and discussed what kind of activities we would like to do. Most of our time and energy will be going in to this project. I didn't really feel like going out or anything, so I just stayed in, and relaxed!
Today I had a really bad awakening. My eyes were flared up, like HUGE. I looked like a raccoon or something. And worst of all there was a community event we were to be on our way for an hour later. I didn't end up going because they were like burning and watering. This has happened before, so I must be allergic to something. So I spent today in bed. The rest of the group went to an immigration christmas party; for newly immigrated children. Everyone had a good time, and they were a big help. I wish I got to go, stupid eyes. And they are still like huge, and bright red. Im hoping for the best for tomorrow.
I am so excited for our Katima cousins to visit us on New Years! And then the other group which is even closer to us, will arrive new years day for two nights. We haven't really known them however they are part of our cluster, they were just really far away from us in Ontario. We met them on the bus before we got dropped off at our home. So two groups will be through our house during New Years week! Then the next weekend PEI! I am stoked to cross over that really long bridge, you usually see it on post cards for PEI! I am nervous though, it is very long, but the ocean view will be cool!
I am really starting to miss the "Sault" and the soup kitchen there. It can be difficult adjusting so fast, and having a new job already and such. I am excited that I will have David now at work, because he isn't house manager anymore, and we will be walking to and from work together. I am getting excited for Christmas, and it is so weird I will be without family, but it is unique for all of us! I know we will be doing some good events before christmas to give back. My competency is organizing a food drive for the YMCA food bank. They are really needing donations right now, so Katimavik is going to help out! We also planned to help out at the harvest shelter supper going on at a church. It is an organization which helps out people get the resources they need like a home, or food. They have a shelter, and also apartments and such to give out to those in need most. We will help set up and serve at it next Saturday. I am excited!! We are still looking for more events to help out at, its really difficult because lots of places already have enough people. We are also looking in to going in to retirement homes, because there is always activities and such going on to help people with. If anyone has any suggestions let me know:)
I should get to sleep, since I have an early morning tomorrow. I miss everyone lots!
Peace & Love
