pura vida.
I am currently sitting in really dirty wet clothes from planting grass all day in the hot sun, until the usual rain breaks through shortly after lunch. Its refreshing, and I am getting used to that rain creeping in everyday. The last couple of days have been really chill. The last day I wrote we went on a tour to see some more mountains and a dam, and helped out serving at the restraunt for the other people on the tour. In the evenings here we usually play cards, and hang out with some of the local kids, we end up being really tired by like six so we dont stay up too late. Also it is dark here at like 545 which probably makes sense, im just not used of it. Yesterday we had a meeting with the recylcing department. One lady runs the show for it here, and they dont even have a recycling place, so they collect recycables once a month and bring them to the park to sort, and also apparently only like 10 percent of the city participates. They want us to get a program going since we come from a country that is more developed when it comes to this system. We are going to work on a plan to educate students on the simple ways of washing plastic out, folding carboard, etc. and we will help collect this material from families. I am looking forward to being a part of this transistion in hopes to get more people recycling. After this lady bought us costa rican sun hats, and bandannas in the independence day colours for Costa Rica. Also she is going to get us girls traditional outfits for independance day this Thursday, and Adam an outfit the men would wear. The traditional dresses are so beautiful, we have already been to a couple events where they are dancing in them.
After we got our tourist gear, and looked hilaurious we went in to the high school, of course all eyes on us.. We always stick out in a crowd, its cool to be on the other side of the fence. I am used of new people coming to Canada, however now I am a minority, its an interesting experience though! They were having their independence day ceremony in the high school, and they introduced us to the school. They had really amazing performances, music, dancing the whole bit. It was cool to be a part of such a special moment for them. We had lunch the usual,, rice.. beans.. costa rican diet at diegos office and then we went to go work for the municipality=city work. We transplanted some plants to bring to the park, and planted some flowers, grass, trees an asortment of different things. I experienced some sexism when Adam was the only one asked to lay some cement down. I wont be letting that one slide again let me tell you. We want to create a positive image for women to feel empowered to go out and work with the men. There is no reason why women should feel like they belong at home cooking, cleaning and what not. Already guys have looked at us different for doing some more manly jobs in their perspective, but im rockin it! We also did some errands after, and didnt arrive home until like 630. Jorge made a delcious soup, and we loved the change from rice every meal.
Today we went to do some more work for the municipality, so we loaded up the truck with long grass, and went up the mountain. It was really hot, and the bugs were really bad. We dug holes, and planted about fifty plants, however we have like 50 more for tomorrow. It was nice to work on our own schedule today. As I have mentioned the good old tico time.. well when we are waiting for a ride that is on its way as an example its always like an hour later. So we have been playing hacky sack all the time, I am actually getting better at it, we use hands too its funny. We have been playing different games to keep ourselves entertained. I love how layed back it is though.
Tonight we are going to label the house in both languages, this worked really well in katimavik to get familiar with different words of things you use and see everyday. We start english lessons next week, and we will be doing different activities for the independence day this week!
I think Adam is about to post some pics to facebook, and ill give you melanies link to her blog to see some pictures! I will get some going on here soon, it just keeps freezing and Ilose everything. I hope its not getting too cold too fast in Canada. love love love.
