If I was a tree growing tall and green All I'd want is you to shade me and be my leaves
I am currently a very happy one- I have come to realize I am so caught up in my Katima Life, I forget what reality is anymore. The last few days have been interesting, I feel like I am in a constant battle with time, because it always gets away from me too fast. Friday I went to work later because I was staying late for the youth night. To add to the record, I woke up late. My phone keeps going back to Manitoba time, so my alarm goes off two hours after from when I was supposed to be up. That doesn't help me at all, luckily someone says "Amy, aren't you supposed to be up?" And then I continue with a whole bunch of jumbled words from frustration. Anyway, I finally got to work after missing the next bus, so then I resorted to a cab. My life can be so ridiculous some days. Chelsea and I were literally like running so fast to the bus stop, and then we realized we missed it, and felt stupid. The day at work was normal, we always play Bingo on Fridays, so that is always fun. They all get so excited about winning the prizes, and I help the ones out who don't understand numbers as well. In the afternoon I spend the regular hour and a half in total waiting for a certain someone to get ready, in the change rooms with before swimming and after. I now bring a book to read, to keep my mind busy, than running around in my own thoughts while I wait. Youth night was fun, I enjoy fridays because there are so many kids, so it keeps me busy. I hung out with a few girls, and we played cards, and just chatted. Its fun to hang out with the youth who come, because every week they get more closer with you, as they see you more often. We are putting a lot of time in to our collective project, some Katima groups only do like a weekend project, and we are spending 3 nights all together each week for this. I think it's really great, and something special we will all always remember.
In the evening, I came home with Katie, and Evan, David, and Marina KB was home. We all chilled. Everyone else went to see Richibucto since most of them were on their 48 hours off and they came to Moncton, to stay in a hostel. There are a couple people in my group who have relationships with that group so a few of them went over to hangout with them. Instead I stayed at home, and I enjoyed my friday evening. I stayed up way too late though! Saturday mornning- sleeping in was so wonderful:) When everyone woke up we labelled the house in french and english. That was really fun because we also put up phrases in both languages which we use all the time. After that most of us went to the mall, I went with Katie and Chelsea! This was a special trip because Katie decided to chop over nine inches off her hair for the Canadian Cancer Society. It was so exciting, and it got me more motivated to actually follow through with cutting my hair shorter, we will see! However, I am so proud that Katie would do such an amazing thing for a great cause:) After the mall we came home, and had chop suey for supper and its was so good- Katie and David did a good job with their house managing week.
Saturday night I went downtown to see some of the Richibucto volunteers with a few of the people here. We walked around, and chilled. Later on we did some more fun things- and got in a little bit of trouble, but of course fun trouble;) Anyway, later on Chelsea, Katie, Marinakb and I had a good talk. We spent like two hours going around in a circle sharing things about ourselves; so that was nice. I learned a lot more about these girls, so that was special. After a super late night once again I crashed. Sunday we got to sleep in a bit, and then Katie woke me up at like 11:30 because we were leaving to go the Acadian museum at the university campus. It was super interesting, I learnt that during the first half of the 20th century the creation of the acadian culture was in full swing. As other people questioned the use of french language in public places. From this the Acadians demanded that English textbooks be replaced with French textbooks; there is when the cooperative movement began as a response to difficult socio-economic conditions. Later on in the 20th century acadians had serious threats of assimilation, they claimed their right to determine their own destiny. They then transformed the cultural, economic, linguistic, and political landscape. This is when they really established their culture through speaking french, having acadian music, and special acadian meals. For me this was interesting to see how New Brunswick became bilingual, and I learned a lot more about the Acadian culture. I knew a lot of people around me here are Acadian, however it was nice to gain more insight in to how they got here, and such. Among other things, I was mostly interested in how they saved their language, and culture. I also got a few artists from the museum, I thought that was cool. They also had lots of folklore which got passed on to generation to generation. Like spots where treasure was sought to be buried, and you would be met with ghosts from the past if you tried to go digging for it. Many stories like that, it is interesting because people actually believed those things. It's interesting to see how they passed those tales down. The last quote I read as I was leaving the exhibit was "Acadie is a constellation of words in the galaxy of human languages, within ourselves, what is unfinished and what is yet to come question one another - Acadie exists in the real and in the imaginary that feeds it" I thought that was inspirational, and it summed up all my thoughts on this unique culture.
After we had time to go around and look at everything in the museum, we had a group discussion on our thoughts and such. After I shared what I learned, I was listening to everyone else. It was cool how everyone got something different out of it. I was especially interested in the point which Marina KB made. She mentioned that French culture came to Canada because of the trading posts. I was excited, I love learning new things!! After this we walked home, as it is only like 25 minutes away. I have come to realize my generalization on walking distances has really changed, as I walk more often now. And a 45 minute walk is no big deal for me. When we got home I had the best nap ever, and then we had supper. After supper we had a our usual KCC meeting, and that was just fine and dandy. After Marina D and I got together our menu for this week as we are the new house managers Hooray! We decided on a tight and bright themed supper for Wednesday I believe, and Tuesday is talk in your second language supper. Lots of excitement always!
Other than all that for Sunday, my day was very emotional. It was the one year mark since my fellow camp counsellor friend Adam past away. I can't believe its been a whole year, and it was so difficult for everyone from camp- although we all came together and it made us all so strong together. It was so hard for me to be away from everyone, at a difficult time. There isn't a day I don't think about Adam, and I miss him so much. I hope everyone celebrated his life, and reminisced about all the good times. He was quite the character, and he had the biggest heart! Lots of love and strength to my camp family, and for everyone else who had Adam in their life.
Moving on to Monday- which is today! I love when I get up to date on my posts. I got to sleep in a little bit since Marina and I didn't have to start our house managing duties until like 10am. That was nice. After we cleaned up the house a bit, we went to go get groceries with our project coordinator. We took a long time in the grocery store, we were both so indecisive on which brand, and for silly little choices. We took almost two hours, and that was only for half of the week. I felt bad for Denise, however I am learning how to be more time efficient as I go. Tonight we made Spaghetti and a spinach salad. It's interesting because we aren't aloud to buy any tomato sauces or anything, so we always have to make our own sauces. SO we threw the recipe book aside, and just looked for what ingredients we should have. And then we made our own creation, for the veggie sauce I used lentils for protein. Both of the sauces turned out wonderful, and Douglas and I were proud! First day went well, and I am hoping for a peaceful week with no stress. Let's see what happens, however I am confident!
Tonight we had the regular KCC planning, and YMCA planning. Things are looking well for the next little while. My competency is getting involved with the Canadian Cancer Society Bowling Fundraiser. We are entering a team for bowling, and we will raise money with doing so. This event is on a Saturday at the end of Feb! I am excited, we haven't went bowling yet, and it will be for a good cause. We are also looking in to volunteering at retirement homes. I really want too! So I hope they start answering our calls, playing phone tag is not fun! Tomorrow will be another busy day, as house manager so I best be going.
This weekend my sisters and mom are coming to visit, I am so excited! It is our 48 hours off so that will be nice. Everyone has family coming to visit other than Evan, Claude, David, and Chelsea. That is impressive- apparently there is never family visiting or at least not as many families. I am looking forward to the weekend!!
Lots Peace & Love
Amy (:
