Happy Birthday Kayla!
I think ever since I was younger I appreciated the first snow fall, then after a week I was already sick of it, and dreaming of summer. Although I am surprised, I am making the most out of this early cold weather. I actually want to enjoy winter this year, I am always so miserable and just waiting for it to do it's thing and be on it's way, but the reality is it's that kind of weather most of the year. And what? We get only like 3 or 4 months of actual sunshine if were lucky. So I may as well start making the most out of the cold winters. Today I even wore my winter jacket for the first time of the season, and yup I wore it with a smile. I should be good at Winters, because I do come from Manitoba, who would know a good winter best? Ha ha, oh the Blizzard days I can think of.
This week our house managers are both completely french, I think this is nice for them. They can actually talk all day in French, without us English people and our language in the background for at least some of the day. The thing with that is, the French people are actually pretty well off with English. They understand us, and can communicate great. Apparently, Francophones usually leave the program completely Bilingual, then English people will learn Functional French, however they won't absorb near as much as the Francophones. This is because lots of everything we do is in english, and most of our conversations are in English. Even if us Anglophones are trying to speak French. I spent tonight learning common words, and sentences I would use everyday. I am making a wall of French words and such beside my bed to review before going to bed. I believe this is the most effective way to start getting a better base on the French Language.
Well this week was alright, Alexa our project coordinator was in on Wend to do a mid rotation reflection, since we are half way through our stay here in the Sault. She is from Ottawa, and is my Project Leader's supervisor. She was really cool, and I enjoyed meeting her, Instead of only skype conversations. On Thursday she did job tours, to see how our work placements are. And she came at the perfect time to the Soup Kitchen. We were both playing cards with Teddy a man who is in a wheel chair. I play cards with him most days, even if he cheats all the time, and he will always win ha ha. Anyway, so there was a lady who came to the soup kitchen very intoxicated. She was screaming and yelling at everyone, so she got asked to leave instead she rather the Police escort her. So we had to call the police, meanwhile Alexa is there. It was the most action I have seen there, and it so happened my my project leaders supervisor was at my work, how funny.
The last couple of days have been really busy at the soup kitchen with the Good Food Boxes. Where we make boxes of like fruit, vegetables, all the good stuff, and its only 15.00 per box, and each box holds like 25.00 value of food. Most of these boxes are sponsored to give to the families, however some people pay the money. I believe there was 177 boxes this month. They do it once a month. It was interesting delivering them. So I got to see the process of packing the boxes, seeing families and people come in asking to sponsor and donating the money and then also bringing these boxes of joy to peoples doors who can't afford fresh vegetables and fruit each month.
Today we went to pick up some stuff from an old restraunt which was closing down. The soup kitchen collects almost anything that is open to the public to take. So we take books, clothes, childrens stufff, towels, dish ware etc. So we brought tons of stuff back to the soup kitchen, however I think I found lots for myself too ha ha.
Also the Sleep in a box fundraiser is soon, we are making a music video which is like Im in a box! which is similar to the "Im on a Boat" song. Haha, I am excited.. it's a good way to advertise this great cause.
I am really getting tired, today was the early morning sit down breaky and I didn't get much sleep last night. And tomorrow is the early morning hike wooo! Im not sure if thats sarcasm or not, but a hike I know will be fun. It will be nice to get back in to nature, and just appreciate the beauty of it! I forgot to mention, I even got out last night with some locals. It was lot's of fun, and good to get out of the house. We all think it would be good to establish friendships outside of the house too, because it will help our relationships in the house too, so I did just that! I love meeting new people.
We start billeting next thursday! I actually found my own billeting family, through word of mouth at the Soup Kitchen. Someone who works in the Children's Program department, asked around. And this one lady was interested. So Ben my PL has a an interview with her and her family tomorrow. Its cool because it will be on a reserve, and Ill get to go out of town. And experience life, living with an Aboriginal family for ten days. I also believe the lady works for a non profit organization, similar to like a Women's Shelter. So I can hopefully go to work with her and see what thats all about, and open up my eyes some more. I will still be going to work like a normal week everyday, So i will just be spending the evening at my billeting family and the one weekend. It should be fun!
Kayla I hope your Birthday is and was amazing. You are in my thoughts today:) Love ya!
And as for everyone else, have a spectacular weekend, and remember to keep smiling!
