This is the truth
This is the truth
If we turn things upside down
we can't hope for justice to win in the world
We would be lying to you if we said
that acceptance and diversity will replace prejudice and hate
That we have a great future ahead
that your lives will be filled with success
That your friends will be safe and happy
and before anything- you myst know we do not deserve such things
And we are convinced of this because we know ourselves
apathy and hypocrisy are in our nature
we refuse to believe under any circumstance that we can turn things around in the next year
we may be sinking to new depths but there are even more relations to come
we have only destiny
and whether we like it or not
This is the truth
..Now read it from the bottom up,
This is very inspirational, and insightful. There are always two meanings or stories to one word or one poem such as this one.
Prejudices do exist yes, however they may change. It really depends if you read this poem from top to bottom, or bottom to top.
The author of this poem in unknown at this point.
We did a workshop last night- called positive space, and it was about derogatory terms, and the dual meanings to words we use to call eachother down, or just say not realizing what were "actually" saying. It started off, with a skit. Three people had a part, and they all said something about the test, and how "lame" it was, and how it was "retarded" and they got "raped" it was so difficult. Well then they had to read it again, and it was like It was Paralized from the waste down, and that is what "lame" actually means, and then it was like it physically abused me, and then finally how it was "mentally handicapped". I honestly have never looked at it this way, because I always call things lame, and i use "retarded" all the time. However we never know if it will offend anyone in the room, when we say these things. Because honestly how do we know, if someone has a family member who is disabled in some way and either way, and this goes for most derogatory words, like swear words, racial comments, and sexual orientation words. It's so crazy how we use these, while we curse, and how we usually say "fuck" when were mad, or need to get our point across for the shock effect of everyones attention, because people will probably here you if you yell "What the fuck" instead of what is going on?
We were talking about this, so we could create a positive environment for here in the Katima house. I don't know if anyone else has realized this, but words are always changing from socially correct to words which end up being offensive. Example would be, "Nigger" which used to be a common word, and now it is a word that makes you feel sick, and it's a word you would never want to use, whatever your anger might be. This is called "Euphemism Treadmill" defined as: "The act or example of substituting a mild, indirect or vague for one considered harsh, blunt or offensive" Also, if you think about words used to describe on who is mentally challenged. This word describing this illness has changed over the years to what is socially correct, because one uses it as a disrespectful word such as "Retarded" this word is now used to just call someone stupid, but it used to be the correct word for someone with a disability. As soon as there is a negative connotation with a word, is is then dropped, and like i said before it is described as the Euphemism Treadmill. Today the word to describe one with a disability is, "differently abled" because is doesn't have a negative connotation yet. Did you know the word Picnic about 70 years ago used to mean, when rich people would bring their slaves down to a nice park for lunch, and others would do the same and they would fight their slaves against each other. Now it is just means a nice peaceful lunch down by the river or in a park.
Other than all that, we also had words on the wall, in different sections. These words were - Ethnicity, Nationality, Sex, Heritage, Body, Age, Gender, Other, Religion, and Money. This was an example of how people can be categorized by these terms. We were asked questions such as, "Have you ever been discriminated, because of this?" and you could go stand by the word and tell your story. Also, there was a question that was more positive, it was just a simple go stand by the thing that your most proud of, and you could explain to everyone your story. That whole workshop was so insightful, and an eye opener to everything I have talked about.
Anywho, nothing much has happened, this week we have just worked full time like usual and just stayed in at night to do workshops. Tomorrow we are doing a scavenger hunt in the evening, it should be fun!
Today lots of people came in with donations, and it was very refreshing. I guess it is the thanksgiving season, and people are doing the act of "giving". I met the girl I will be tutoring, and she is very shy. Hopefully soon, we will get rolling on exercises to get her grades to improve. She is just below her grade level, however I hope I will be able to help her!
Today I have had a weird day, I have been in and out of consciousness all day, and I am at peace with hearing harmonica, acoustic guitar, and my cousin Geoff's beautiful music which has both of those lovely things. Check it out at www.myspace.com/thebottlebreaks he is a wonderful musician. -and "Blame Game" is a very special song to me; And my family will know why, as it is special for them too. I am happy I could share all this with everyone.
Much Love Everyone
