New faces, New place!
I now officially live in Ontario! I started Katimavik yesterday, and it was a crazy travel day. I got picked up at the airport by my project leader, and three other participants. One was from quebec, and hardly knows any english, one from Newfoundland, and the other from BC. Then Moi from Manitoba. And now everyone is here!! We have a few from ontario, and everywhere else I listed, and one more from quebec too I believe. I don't got my story straight yet though with where everyone is from. So it was a pretty early night yesterday, because everyone was so tired. And today is our full first day! We just had breaky, it was cool to have a full breakfast table again.. there is about 11 of of us in this three story house! And there are 4 girls in one room, and im in a room with just one other girl and I. And the guys have two rooms across us, we call this floor the "quad" and same story with them 4 guys one room, and 2 guys in the other! Its pretty cool to have so many people around moi, keeps me from getting lonely:)
Well I didn't get to finish this earlier, we went over the introduction to Katimavik, and we talked about like the impact Katimavik has on Canada and communities within it.. And last year Katimavik participants all over Canada combined worked 803,471 hours and it was worth 13249236$ all together. So thats millions of dollars back in to communities, and thats why I am doing this program, it's going to be so good for me. I also need to learn french, and I will before this program is over. We apparently will have french classes, and french meals where we can only speak in french. It's necessary because there is a few people in my group who speak French as their first language and it can be difficult with some of us being english, and for the english ones, the french confusion is culture shock!
So tonight were having pizza! And making a group katima flag to represent our group! Apparently there is a group coming to visit tomorrow night from a close by town. And they are bringing their flag, PRESSURE! Ha ha, ours must be better. Another funny fact about today i learned that this community sometimes has different views of what "katimavik" really means. Oh and by the way it means "Meeting Place" in inuktotuk, which makes sense for putting like 10-12 volunteers in a house to live, sharing rooms and what not. Anyway our project leader Ben, said that people think that were like a religous group sometimes, a group of hippies, or "troubled teens trying to get their life back together" ha ha, I laughed out loud not only because Im kind of a hippie, but because we really aren't as a whole any of those! But we are told to tell people what Katimavik is, and what we are doing while in the program.
Ha ha, moving on-- after going over our group contract, and all that jazz.. we had some time off and we went to this cool park, to play football, however i was in the second bus load haha, and Ian one of the guys from NFLD, had done a cartwheel and hit his head on the cement, so I went with him, Mitch, and our project leader to the hospital. And he got stitches or a staple actually in there, he is so funny. He is always so happy.. and right after all he cared about was getting to the gym. I wish I was that positive ha ha, Apparently people from Newfoundland are actually super super friendly:) Another interesting this when going to the park, I saw a body of water I believe one of the great lakes, and I learned that Michigan In the States is right on the other side of it, and I can just walk over in to the states. I didn't know we were so close, and Michigan? Im surprised!
So I will be going for Job tours right away, to non profit organizations to see where I might be working. As for now- I know a couple people will be working for Habitat for Hummanity, the United Way, A centre for Disadvantaged Adults with challenges, and I forget what other places. But ill go for an interview, and be placed with a full time job 9-5 week days! For three months until I move to NB!
Wow I have wrote a lot, but it's all just so exciting for me. And I will be updating all the time to keep track of it all, and for my friends and family to see whatsup. This is a really special place, and the people here are all so great!
Peace & Love!
