I enjoy having kitchen dance parties,
I am so tired once again. Although I feel like I need to put all my thoughts down here to keep track and to keep everyone else updated. Today was another day at work, although it was pouring rain. That's when i reflected back to when I would get to drive in a nice warm car everyday to school- and I would feel bad for the people standing beside the bus stop when it was super cold, or if it was pouring rain. Well, today it sure was pouring. I was literally soaked by the time I got to my work, even with rain gear and all. I started off folding napkins with this guy named larry, he has been coming to the soup kitchen for 15 years, and he is very proud that he comes in to make coffee every morning. Also I found lots of the volunteers I was sitting with were very negative, they were all complaining about other people. And these volunteers are people who are just serving time, to put food in their stomaches, they don't have any other paying job. So some may have disabilities, mental illness, ect. These are my coworkers.. So it gets interesting. But there are like office people who I spend time with as well, and then the head cook on duty has some common sense atleast. But at that whole place, there are only like three people who are actually getting paid. So it all runs on volunteer's, which is amazing.
So I spent the morning helping prepare for the lunch meal they serve to the public. I made subs, and then I helped serve the roast beef and potatoes. It was interesting to interact with the people more. They say "complaints are a 1$" but the food is free, and man do alot of people complain- It's like be grateful for what you get. But then someone puts a smile on your face by saying thank you for everything, and its warming! After lunch I cleaned up the kitchen, and had some lunch! In the afternoon I started putting together a presentation for Katimavik, for the soup kitchen feast next thursday. I thought it would be goood to introduce "Katimavik" as a team to the soup kitchen! And I volunteered us to serve at it! It takes place in the evening, and there is aboriginal drummers coming. It will be really neat to be apart of it, also I am getting media coverage there, to raise awareness of the soup kitchen, and also for us to be introduced to the community- so they don't actually think were on a missionary religous thing ha ha! So Im super excited, ill be working on a presentation the next couple days. Today I also put together a couple Children's programs for early next week in the pm, when the kidlets come to "brighter beginnings" at the soup kitchen after school! They are all so cute. This man donated 2 play houses, and when the girls saw them they started running and they were so so happy, it was so amazing. I realized I used to have the one play house when I was younger, I was confused on why it was so familiar!
Tonight, Ian and Mitch cooked sups. We had a stir fry, it was good. However we had two guests so you could tell they were a little uneasy and worried. This man from Clean North office, an environmental store came for supper and his volunteer assistant who was close to our age! When cleaning up we had the funniest sing along. Apparently someone had a request for "Mood shadow" (Thats for camp people) so we rocked out to that, ha ha.. then If I had a hammer! It was so funny. Anyway, then we had a presentation about Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling. I learned you should always try to re use things, before recycling because even that takes energy. And also reducing your waste, by buying bulk food, so there is not as much packaging. Also, we learned how to compost. Which everyone should do! Because you would save so much garbage. Like you can even compost paper, and like paper towel, and so many things you would think only go in to the garbage. Hey! It costs like 5$ for extra bags here, And your only allowed two garbage bags per house on the weekly garbage day! They will literally only take 2 unless there is extra tags on the other ones.
So it was really cool, and the guy that came is super involved with Katimavik, and he is going to take us on an overnight excursion like hike thing by the trails up along the great lakes! I am super excited. Then we walked to Tims, and that was my night.
Im literally falling asleep, so i probably make no sense. I just know that some people want me to update! Im going to leave you all with a special quote that was said at the United Way Barbecue.
