Bus transit = not my thing, ha ha...
Today was another jam packed day, and I know some of my family want me to blog again- as I should because things are happening so fast I wouldn't be able to keep track of everything if I didn't do it often. We woke up early today, well I slept in.. breaky was at 8 am, however I wanted to get up earlier to shower and such.. but the PL(project leader) woke chelsea and I up, and pretty much everyone else.. we are all very tired. I must have slept through my alarm>my mom is probably about to call me to give me the speech to be more responsible ha ha! But any who, We had our "katima cousins" come today around 930 for orientation and workshops all day. It was cool to meet even more new people! Im not sure if I mentioned this last night but we make a kick ass group flag to represent us. We had painted it to resemble the katimavik symbol. And we learned today from Emily our Regional project leader, that the orange symbol means sun, and the green rectangle is grass, and the sun is shining down on it. I will put a pic with this blog post of it:)
Moving on, so we did some fun ice breaker games to get to know everyone, and did some group work to learn about all the rules and important stuff thats really common sense. We went over the competencies that we follow while in katimavik, its kind of like our objectives and main focuses. Like being environmentally friendly, learning our second language, being multicultural, like having meals that resemble some of the cultures in our community; and in that case the second language here is Italian... soo mmm pizza and pasta! Ha ha, crazy it's so Italian here. There are many more competencies, about eight we need to focus on over the duration of the program. We also decided we would play scrabble in Francais or do scavenger hunts around the house needing to find things in our second language, so it shall get interesting!
So at the end of the day before the Elliot Lake group left we did regional presentations, which meant we would break in to our regions to come up with a skit to represent our region. Well out of the two groups which equals 25 with both project leaders and Regional leader, I was the only Manitoba Volunteer. So I decided to dress up in my heaving sweater with a fur hood, and wear my mocasins and fuzzy mittens! And just complain about how cold I am, and how I can't start my vehicle, but you all know how boring it is in MB, I tried to make it interesting- but Im sorry, its not as exciting as being able to go surfing in BC, then snowboarding that same day ha ha. But everyone got a kick out of everyones skits. Ian from NFLD, you will all know who Ian is soon, because he is so rediculous and I always have funny stories about him. Well he went up and was like "come for the fish, but be stuck in the airport because of the fog" ha ha, short and sweet. Another cool thing, this Aboriginal from the Elliot Lake group did his presentation and he is from a nation by Toronto, however he isn't actually Canadian, because they like to belong to their own people or something. His family name or history were the Aboriginals back in the day that took huge part in the formation of Canada. And he mentioned that if it wasn't for his people we wouldn't be Canada, and we would be attached to the U.S! That was something really cool, he also said Aboriginals hate being called Native Canadians because they don't want to be known as Canadian as a box term because it means village or house or something. It's cool they like to be apart of their own group. I was going to say they are more unique then most Canadians however the term "Canadian" is a story of itself with how multicultural we are. However, his history and story is pretty cool, and interesting!
So it was a good day! We got the night off because of all the information we absorbed today, and we were all exhausted anyway. Half the group went to a football game from a local high-school, I wasn't up for that. I just got a nice Bus Pass and I want to explore, because we are surrounded by Great Lakes and cool scenary and its so green here, and it was so beautiful today, I literally forgot what the sun looked like ha! Instead of the football game like I mentioned earlier, Ian, Marina, David, and Evan and I went exploring when we saw a bus stop and loved our new bus passes. Ha ha, well I loved mine until I was talking away with the bus driver and put my pass in the money bill slot and it ate my pass, there is actually a slot that says bus pass and doesn't have a 5$ bill representing it beside it... Ha ha I definetely made a fool out of myself infront of the full bus and to the bus driver; Way to give an impression to our first community the 2nd time I leave the house! Ha ha things just don't seam to go smoothly here.. ahem "hospital visit"! Ahh... so Ill have to get a new one of those, when we got back on to come back home a couple hours later it was the same bus driver, and I pretended to put my transfer in the money slot.. and he def recognized moi. While on our adventure we drove around, then got dropped off down town, and went to the biggest mall in North America, apparently we have it here in my Sault. Ste Marie! Weird! This town only has like 60,000 people in it. Anyway we ended up sitting in the mall and talking about weird obscure things I usually raise in conversations, then in twisted in to a debate about life.. Id say it was a good bonding moment ha ha! Then we realized we would miss our bus and we should go, And I didn't even get to see the water because it was dark by the time we got out and it was just right on the other side of the mall! Oh well there is tomorrow.
As of now, I am just sitting around with some of the group. It's so great to always be surrounded by people. Its difficult sometimes when you need downtime, and you literally can't be alone because you share a room, and there is always people in different places in the house. Well I suppose this house is fairly big, so there is a lot of space. Elliot lake actually was very envious of how much space we have. Apparently they have only one room for girls and one for guys. I felt bad, but I will for sure appreciate this extra space we get:)
I shall be peacing out once again, tomorrow shouldn't be as crazy but still more information to absorb. Im thinking of everyone back home, but enjoying every second here.
Write soon again,
Much Love Everyone<3<3<3
